Creating Safe, Supportive Spaces for Local Families

Thanks to the generous support of the TURSA Community Grants Program, Family Support Network has transformed its playgroup space into a vibrant Child, Family and Community Hub where children and caregivers can learn, play and connect together.

The new resources have enabled us to create a thoughtfully prepared environment where children aged 0–5 can explore at their own pace using developmentally appropriate materials that encourage curiosity, creativity and confidence. Open-ended play experiences now provide opportunities for children to develop early literacy through mark making and storytelling, early numeracy through sorting, counting and pattern play, and fine motor skills through creative activities. Every experience is designed to support learning through play while allowing children to follow their own interests.

The addition of new gross motor equipment has also had a significant impact. Children are developing coordination, balance, spatial awareness and confidence as they move, climb, jump and explore in a safe, supervised environment. The foam pit has quickly become a favourite, providing opportunities for whole-body movement, sensory exploration and supported risk-taking that builds both physical skills and self-confidence.

Importantly, the enhanced environment supports more than children’s development—it strengthens relationships. The space has been intentionally designed to encourage caregivers and children to play, create and learn together, supporting secure attachment and positive family interactions. Families spend time exploring activities alongside their children, sharing experiences that build connection while creating positive memories together.

The response from families has been overwhelmingly positive. Caregivers consistently comment on the variety of toys, creative materials and engaging activities now available. Many have told us how much they appreciate having a welcoming space where their children are highly engaged, can return to favourite experiences each week, and where they themselves feel comfortable connecting with other families.

The TURSA Community Grant has enabled us to deliver on our vision of creating safe, inclusive and welcoming environments that promote early intervention, community connection and children’s wellbeing. These resources will continue to benefit hundreds of local children and families for years to come, creating lasting opportunities for learning, belonging and healthy development. This reflects the original vision for the Child, Family and Community Hub: a welcoming environment that promotes child development, strengthens family relationships, reduces isolation and provides a soft entry point to support for families in the Northern Rivers.
