Families Together

Navigating tough times

The Families Together program is part of the NSW Government’s Family Preservation program and is delivered in partnership with families and the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ). The program works alongside families to strengthen safety, wellbeing and parenting capacity, helping children remain safely at home wherever possible.

Families Together provides practical, flexible, and individually tailored support based on each family’s strengths, goals and circumstances. Support is primarily delivered in the family’s home and community and may include case management, parenting support, advocacy, service coordination, referrals to specialist services, and assistance to address practical needs such as housing, health care, education, childcare, Centrelink and the NDIS.

Every family is different. The intensity and type of support are tailored to individual needs, with services generally provided over a period of up to 12 months. Families work alongside their practitioner to build on strengths, reduce risks, improve family functioning, and achieve lasting positive outcomes.

Families are generally referred by the Department of Communities and Justice (DCJ).

Families Together aims to:

  • Keep children safe at home in a stable, nurturing family environment.
  • Strengthen parenting confidence, skills and family functioning.
  • Improve the safety, wellbeing and development of children and young people.
  • Help families access the practical supports and services they need.
  • Reduce the risk of children entering out-of-home care by addressing concerns early and building long-term family capacity.
